Earlier this year I left my safe, secure public service job and relocated to Broken Hill for a contract to run the Library and participate in the building project for a new $14million facility. I am filled with a sense of pride and excitement as the months go by. Managing the Library here, creating a team, creating a vision, is an enriching experience – not just professionally but personally as well.
With a dedicated team of six, plus our invaluable casuals and volunteers, we are at the heart of a project that promises to redefine the town’s educational and cultural landscape: a new state-of-the-art library facility set to open in the second half of 2025.
The Heart of Knowledge and Community
The new library is not just a building; it’s a testament to the town’s commitment to community and learning. We are mindful that we are creating a space that will inspire generations to come, as the previous Library has done since it opened in 1968.
Broken Hill: A Town Like No Other
Broken Hill, the Silver City, is a gem that offers more than meets the eye. It’s a town where history and modernity blend seamlessly, creating an environment that’s both dynamic and comforting.
The Living Desert
The Living Desert encapsulates the beauty of the outback. With nature’s artistry on full display, there are trails that lead to a breathtaking sculpture park and panoramic views of the surrounding saltbush desert scape.
Vibrant Art Culture
Broken Hill and Silverton are known for their vibrant art scenes, with numerous galleries that showcase a diverse range of artworks. The art scene is a vibrant tapestry, woven with the stories and talents of local artists who find inspiration in the rich hues of the desert. From Pro Hart to Dame June Bronhill, Broken Hill prides itself on having produced some of Australia’s finest artists and performers.
Mining History
The town’s mining history is a narrative of resilience and discovery. The heritage-listed Silver City has roots that delve deep into the earth, reflecting the enduring spirit of its people. The Miner’s Memorial rising above the Line of Lode is an ever-present reminder of the pioneering courage of hard work and industrial progress.
